Information

Seed Savers/Seed Libraries

We currently have 34 seed libraries in several neighbourhoods around Vancouver.  (See list below.) Some are accessible during regular operating hours, and some are accessible during workshops and other activities.

We run Seed Saving workshops, save seeds from our Collaborative Gardens in West Point Grey and the West End, make seed donations to community and school gardens and other seed libraries, and support efforts to increase seed sovereignty.

If you'd like to get involved, please contact seedsaving@villagevancouver.org.

Hi Celia,

Great re: both the 8th and the potluck.  I'm wondering about starting a bit earlier, as there is a Grandview Woodland neighbourhood village meeting/potluck (visioning session) starting at one on the same day, and it'd be better if they don't overlap.

What about 10 or 10:30ish for the meeting (and prepotluck nibbling!) - think that would work for Robin, will check with Andrew - and then a potluck around noon?

I have an extra copy of How to Start a Seed Collective - been thinking you'd be the likely person to give it to. Let's figure out how to get it into your hands,  this week perhaps? -  I may be near CC later in the week, not sure yet...or if you're going to be on the Westside...)

Cheers,

Ross

Yes, Jan.8th would work for me. How about a vegetarian potluck -- it's always much nicer to mingle, chat and share food together.

Those interested to show up around 1130-noon, with the actual meeting to start around 1230 pm. Who has copies of the seed collective guidelines?  Cylia

Yay Celia!

Thanks for taking some initiative with this, and offering to host a meeting. I've been swamped as usual. I've been in touch with Robin and Andrew (the two people at the workshop who volunteered to be the record keepers).

One date that's been discussed for a meeting is the morning of Sat, Jan 8th. Would you be able to host then?

Cheers,

Ross

Hi Amy:  yes, EYA is such a great group. Let's see where this idea goes. Stay tuned.

Hi Cylia, I am definitely interested in working with others in Cedar Cottage to develop a seed saving collective. You might recall that the Environmental Youth Alliance attempted to organize a Vancouver-wide seed/plant exchange forum (http://vanseedtrade.theforum.name) which unfortunately still needs much development. I'm still hoping to further this project with them, but a neighbourhood-based collective seems like a great model to begin with and to perhaps apply to the EYA's project eventually.

So who is interested in being part of a group in their neighborhood or part of a collective? I am from Cedar Cottage and am putting this idea out there. I could host a meeting in January if there is some response.

I'm interested in saving seeds at our local level but also taking action to stop Monsanto and their ilk's conduct with GM patented seeds that then contaminate other crops resulting in Percy Schmeiser type cases.

If we do not act soon we may as individuals find our seeds subject to stricture by rapacious corporate policies. The third world is already running into problems. Big business has no ethics whatsoever - rape and pillage is their mantra!

Hi Cylia,

The next step will be to identify those neighbourhoods where there may be enough interest to start a seed saving collective, and then to have people get together in their neighbourhoods to discuss the idea and take the 1st steps.

Based on the workshop, I'd say the 1st neighbourhoods might be Strathcona, Grandview Woodland, Kits, and Cedar Cottage.

Cheers,
Ross

Wondering who else from our Seed Savers group (other than Tara and I) have taken a seed saving workshop and what are next steps, if any?
