Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities
Environmental justice, for much of its history, has been treated as a separate movement from our social climate and has been stereotyped for having poor involvement in terms of social justice and systemic racism. Here at Village Vancouver, we aim to be inclusive to all groups and acknowledge whose lands we are on (Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Wautuh). VV, in our climate action movement, works to create opportunities for inclusive dialogue and to engage with Indigenous groups. Environmental justice isn’t simply about the environment, but also the cultures that are deeply intertwined with it. Indigenous cultures are rooted to their environment; their way of life is strongly based on their relationship with the land. With the threat of climate change and environmental degradation, there is a fear for cultural loss. The environmental justice movement is emerging to a more progressive direction. One where Indigenous voices are seen essential and not as an afterthought. Being unified in this movement will only make us stronger as we continue to support one another.
