This walk will focus on Vancouver's long history of working class housing activism. In recent years, Mount Pleasant has become a hotspot for gentrification and evictions, but it has also emerged as a place of renter organizing and community resilience. Sites visited on this walk include the highly-contested Rize tower, at Kingsway and Broadway, and the Lion's Manor housing complex, site of the successful organizing of seniors against a 45% rent increase in 2012. Join us as we tour the unrecognized sites of Mount Pleasant, a vibrant working class, immigrant neighborhood truly worth defending.
