SUMMARY:Workshop - Mark Lakeman (Founder of Portland’s City Repair)
Social Capital as the Primary Economic Engine of Change, with Erin Inn
 es
DESCRIPTION:What can the designs and patterns of natural systems and a
ncient cultures teach us about the ways in which people can collaborat
e most effectively to generate positive economic and social change? Af
ter working for several years in the 1980′s as a lead designer of la
rge scale corporate projects, in the 1989 Mark embarked on a series of
cultural immersion projects with numerous indigenous societies in ord
er to derive place-making patterns which could be applied to urban set
tings in the United States. These patterns include broad participation
, local ownership, and transference of authority to local populations,
creative expression in planned and unplanned processes, and social ca
pital as the primary economic engine of change.\nMark Lakeman’s last
visit to Vancouver in 2011 ignited sparks of inspiration that have al
ready given rise to numerous place-making projects throughout Vancouve
 r. We are excited that Mark will have the opportunity to inspire many
others (hopefully including you!) atLiving the New Economy this Octobe
r.\nIn partnership with Village Vancouver Transition Society\nTickets
available here.\n\nFor more information visit http://villagevancouver.
