SUMMARY:*WANTED: VOLUNTEERS FOR FOOD SCRAPS DROP SPOTS IN THE WEST END
DESCRIPTION:Food Scraps Drop Spots and Composting -- Preparing for New
Launch June 16 at West End Community Centre \nWhat: Stand-Up Briefing
for Anyone Interested in Volunteering\nWhen: Saturday, May 12, 2012,
starting 10 am (30 minutes max)\nWhere: In the mini-park in front of G
ordon Neighbourhood House (1019 Broughton Street) in front of the curr
ent Drop Spot\nWest Enders are embracing the idea of food scraps recyc
ling and composting. For several months until last October, Recycling
Alternative and Vancouver Farmers Markets partnered to run a pilot pro
ject with a Drop Spot at the weekly farmers market, and since then it
has continued every Saturday at the Gordon Neighbourhood House.\nSo fa
r this popular and successful model has received over 5,000 drops and
diverted over 50,000 pounds (about 23,000 kilograms) of food scraps fr
om the landfill! On June 2, the current GNH Drop Spot will move back u
p to the Farmers Market location and continue every week until October
.\nAnd now we have great news! We want to build on the success of this
model and many people have been asking about getting more Spots! A ne
w Drop Spot will open at the West End Community Center, starting on Ju
ne 16, 2012, in a pilot project until October, every Saturday from 10
am to 1 pm.\nNow we are seeking a team of volunteers willing to dedica
te a few hours on rotation about once a month. (We also seek volunteer
s for the West End Car Free Day on June 17.) There are talks underway
for another drop spot that may open soon, and we are interested in tal
king to any community groups that might like to support, sponsor, or b
e involved in these activities.\nIf you are interested, please join ou
r stand-up briefing on May 12. Write foodwestend@gmail.com to voluntee
r or inquire further.\nLouise Schwarz, Recycling Alternative Ross Most
