SUMMARY:VV and Vancouver Peak Oil present: HOW TO STAY SANE AS THE WOR
LD GOES CRAZY w/ Dr. Kathy McMahon
DESCRIPTION:VV, Vancouver Peak Oil, Boards of Change, Cool North Shore
and How to Boil a Frog present:\n\nHOW TO STAY SANE AS THE WORLD GOES
CRAZY w/ Dr. Kathy McMahon\n\nCost: By Donation (Suggested donation i
s $10, or whatever you can afford)\n\nAs we’re bombarded with alarmi
ng headlines on a daily basis, how do we find the sane space between D
oom and Denial? Is there a place for\nwit when we examine the major ch
allenges of our lifetime: economic\ndepression, environmental degradat
ion, and energy depletion? Is blind\noptimism itself, a diagnosable me
ntal disorder?\n\nWith humor and insight clinical psychologist Kathy M
cMahon addresses a few of the major challenges of our time and discuss
es why “all or\nnothing” thinking is cutting short a more serious
conversation about\nwhat we value, how our values dictate our behavior
, and what we need to\ndo to prepare for a future that may be very dif
ferent from what’s been\npredicted.\n\nShe’ll introduce Panglossia
 n Disorder with subtypes such as:\n\n· Rhett-Butlerism – (“Peak O
il? Planetary and economic collapse? Frankly, my dear, I don’t give
 a damn...”)\n\n· Scarlet O’Hara-ism- (“I’ll just have to thin
k about that tomorrow...”) and\n\n· Frank Zappa-ism: (“As soon as
things get really bad, they’ll come up with something”- a belief
that necessity is the mother of invention.)\n\nAll of these are popula
r but ineffective psychological strategies for handling bad news. What
we face aren’t simple problems with clear cut\nsolutions, but rathe
r complicated dilemmas that require good humor,\nmature thinking and t
he ability to tolerate both unpleasant emotions and\njoy in the unexpe
cted. Come join us as we search for a space where we\ncan all be more
human than otherwise.\n\nBio: Since 2006, Kathy McMahon, “The Peak S
hrink,” has been offering clinical wisdom, common sense, and good hu
mor to an international\nreadership, who’ve shared their stories and
sought her advice about\nmanaging in these hard times. Her research p
roject, www.PeakOilBlues.com\nis a collection of these narratives, inv
estigating the emotional impact\non ordinary people, living through dr
amatic economic, energy, and\nenvironmental upheavals.\n\nFor more inf
