SUMMARY:Vancouver Change Camp
DESCRIPTION:What is Vancouver ChangeCamp?\n\nVancouver ChangeCamp is a
participatory web-enabled face-to-face event that brings together cit
izens, technologists, designers, academics, social entrepreneurs, poli
cy wonks, political players, change-makers and government employees to
answer these questions:\n\nHow can we help government become more ope
n and responsive?\nHow do we as citizens organize to get better outcom
es ourselves?\n\nChangeCamp addresses the demand for a renewed relatio
nship among citizens and government. We seek to create connections, kn
owledge, tools and policies that drive transparency, civic engagement
and democratic empowerment.\n\nThe conference will be participant-driv
en, with the agenda created collaboratively at the start of the event,
allowing participants to share their experiences and expertise.\n\nNo
nprofits have a strained relationship with government. It seems like w
e're always yelling at them to open up their data. \"Release the fishe
 ries report!\" \"Publish the grizzly mortality counts!\"\n\nWouldn't i
t be great if nonprofits, community activists, policy wonks and govern
ment all got into a room and discussed our differences? What if govern
ment data defaulted to open, rather than closed?\n\nSounds kumbayah? W
ell, it isn't. In fact, it happened last year. Community activists and
nonprofits sat down with representatives from the provincial and muni
cipal government (including Vancouver's Mayor and BC's Director of Cit
izen Engagement). And amazing things came from it, like:\n\nhttp://ope
nparliament.... a radical mixup of Hansard. Easy tracking of ANY MP an
d Bill\nhttp://data.vancouver.ca/ - a directory of free and open data
sources from the City of Vancouver, which was used to map the effects
of rising sea levels on Vancouver\nThe Province of BC's Apps 4 Climate
Action contest\n\nAt the very core of this event is public participat
ion. Ultimately, it's the people who involved that really make this al
l possible. Whether you're a technologist, creative, marketer, busines
s person, innovator, public policy expert, civil servant, immigrant, p
arent, non-profit worker, student, social media guru, past participant
or just an everyday citizen who wants to be more engaged, we'd love t
o have you involved.\n\nLow income free entry:\nIf the $20 fee present
s a real barrier to you, don't let it! Simply email our Event Coordina
tor Elijah van der Giessen at eli@vandergiessen.ca to register for fre
 e. But be warned: he may try to recruit you as a volunteer! :-)\n\nFor
