SUMMARY:VAN BC FORUM to COMBAT APATHY
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver Alliance Network Because we Care (VAN BC). We be
lieve it is important to begin meaningful dialogue on issues and build
alliances to support various concerns and encourage citizens to be ac
tively involved in developing community based solutions that are consi
stent with the four dimensions of sustainability.\nWe believe it is th
e best interests of all people to engage civil society and build netwo
rks to promote economic, social, environmental and cultural sustainabl
e communities. Many Canadians have expressed feelings of being alienat
ed in our democratic process and choose not to vote. In the last city
(Vancouver) election we had 31% voter turnout, provincially 50% and fe
derally 59%. We view this as unacceptable and want to encourage citize
ns to get fully involved in voting and ongoing community engagement.
\nVAN BC has scheduled the event for February 13, 2011 at the Ray Cam
Community Centre. It will be from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and feature 7 pan
els on key areas. The format will focus on description of the issues a
nd solutions but also on how we intend to build greater community invo
lvement to ensure active engagement of people who feel alienated frust
rated and are uninvolved. The seven panels are, Environment, Women Iss
ues, Education, Childcare, Voter Apathy, Arts and Culture, and Housing
and Homelessness.\n \nThis date, one day prior to the Missing and Mu
rdered Women’s March allows us to show solidarity, promote social su
stainability and highlight that is place “WHERE CHANGE HAPPENS”, i
ncluding critical issues facing women and exploring solutions to Vanco
uver communities challenges to create safe enriching places for women,
families and children.\nVAN BC wants this process to be as welcoming
for all people and has taken several steps to ensure we can get the la
rgest and diverse audience we can. We will be hosting an all day Child
ren’s Festival simultaneously to encourage as many parents and youth
to attend. There will be food and other fun events. If your organizat
ion would like to have an information table or you want to assist plea
se call Scott Clark at 778 709 3165 or email at clarkscott00@hotmail
.com.\n \nThank you for time and we look forward to seeing you on Feb
ruary 13, 2011 at Ray Cam.\n \nWe will be having the VAN BC planning
meeting at Friday February 4th 3:00 PM at Ray Cam community centre.
