SUMMARY:The Future of Social Housing in Vancouver - A Roundtable Discu
 ssion
DESCRIPTION:Saturday, June 16, 2012 1:00pm until 3:00pm\nDouglas Park
Community Centre, 801 West 22nd Avenue\nThe Future of Social Housing i
n Vancouver: Struggles from Little Mountain to Heather Place | PANEL D
ISCUSSION\nFacebook Event Page here.\nIn the midst of an unprecedented
housing crisis, Vancouver is at risk of losing Heather Place, a commu
nity in central Vancouver housing more than two hundred residents and
families. To quote a long-time resident, “Heather Place is a communi
ty to be proud of, an example of how people can and should live.”\nU
nfortunately, instead of investing in needed repairs, the municipal go
vernment has identified Heather Place as a site for condo development.
New “replacement” housing will cost more than twice the current r
ents. Project leaders like Geoff Meggs and Don Littleford have been vo
cal advocates for the path of gentrification, despite continual lip se
rvice paid to Vancouver’s housing crisis.\nLuckily, it is not too la
te to stop the destruction of the Heather Place community. The goal of
this roundtable is to provide some of the background facts and contex
t needed to help save Heather Place:\n• Unpack the unfolding situati
on at Heather Place, especially the impact of gentrification and redev
elopment on low-income tenants. • Draw lessons from the recent past:
the destruction of the Little Mountain community and the false promis
es at the Olympic Village.\n• Provide an overview of how old lines o
f public funding, won through the housing struggles of previous genera
tions, are rapidly disappearing.\n• Look to models in other parts of
the world with robust public housing programs.\nTo save Heather Place
and develop new alternatives, tenants cannot sit back and rely on the
goodwill of governments and planners. We’ve gone two decades withou
t a national housing program, while other levels of government have su
cceeded in a game of “passing the buck.”\nLocal governments have t
aken the withdrawal of federal funding as a license for a reckless age
nda of further privatization and neoliberal entrenchment. Politicians
from all parties have pursued the demolition of public housing, using
a war chest of planning tools to encourage the gentrification of Vanco
uver’s most affordable neighbourhoods.\nIn the face of the dramatic
failure of private partnerships, broken promises, ineffective advocacy
and timid lobbying, the alternative is found in renters themselves, t
he only group capable of organizing against the exploitative rent econ
omy and its endless corrupt governments. Tenant empowerment and educat
ion is the starting point for a new step in the collective struggle fo
r housing justice in the 21st century.\nPanelists:\n• Nathan Crompto
n: “Unpacking Heather Place” • Maria Wallstam: “Present Crisis
: Expiry of Public Funding in BC”\n• Elvin Wyly: “The Gentrifica
tion of Social Housing”\n• Jean Swanson: “The Need for a BC Soci
al Housing Coalition”\n• Sean Antrim: “What’s Possible: Social
Housing in Red Vienna”\nFacilitated by Barry Growe, Community Advoc
ates for Little Mountain (CALM)\n1- 3 PM, June 16th, 2012\nDouglas Par
 k Community Centre, 801 West 22nd Avenue\nWheelchair accessible, child
care provided on-site\n\nFor more information visit http://villagevanc
