SUMMARY:Kits Transition Village Movie Night (with a potluck, of course
!): Power of Community -- How Cuba Survived Peak Oil
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a potluck and screening of Power of Com
munity: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil (2006, 53 min.), followed by a disc
ussion on how this relates to Kits Village, VV, and the Transition Tow
 n movement.\nChild friendly.\nRSVP here.\nWhen Cuba lost access to Sov
iet Oil in the early 1990's, the country faced an immediate crisis --
feeding the population -- and an ongoing challenge: how to create a ne
w low-energy society. Cuba transitioned from large, fossil-fuel intens
ive farming to small, less energy-intensive farming, and from a highly
industrial society to a more sustainable one.\nThis film tells the st
ory of the Cuban people's hardship, ingenuity and triumph over sudden
adversity -- through cooperation, conservation and community, told in
their own words. As the world approaches Peak Oil, Cuba provides a val
uable example of how to successfully address the challenge of reducing
our energy use.\n\"Everyone who is concerned about Peak Oil needs to
see this film. Cuba survived an energy famine during the 1990's, and h
ow it did so constitutes one of the most important and hopeful stories
of the past few decades. It is a story not just of individual achieve
ment, but of the collective mobilization of an entire society to meet
an enormous challenge.\"\n-Richard Heinberg, author of The Party's Ove
