SUMMARY:Edo Period of Japan as a Model of Sustainable Society
DESCRIPTION:Edo period of Japan, from 1600 to 1868, was a time in\nwhi
ch Japan was closed to the outside world. No\nsignificant amount of ma
terial came in or went out\nand the only input was solar energy. They
had a highly\nvibrant culture and sustained a fairly large population\
nand even improved the environment based on the\nsolar energy alone. H
ence, this is a small scale model\nof the Earth which is closed materi
ally and has only\nsolar energy input. We will discuss how they did it
and\nwhy they could do it.\nEiichiro Ochiai, PhD, taught and conducte
d research in\nchemistry at universities in Japan, Canada, United\nSta
