SUMMARY:*De-mystifying De-materialization: the Why, What, & How Behind
Reducing Energy & Materials in Our Economy - Panel w/Bill Rees, Vane
ssa Timmer, & Ross Moster at SCARP Symposium (Symposium is sold out)
DESCRIPTION:Village founder and convenor Ross Moster will be part of a
panel discussion with Vanessa Timmer and Bill Rees on De-mystifying D
e-materialization: the Why, What, and How Behind Reducing Energy and M
aterials in our Economy.\nThis panel will be from 10:40 to 12:00 in th
e morning of Friday, February 10 in Thea's Lounge adjacent to the the
GSS Ballroom at 6371 Crescent Rd.\nRegistration  for the Symposium i
s required. The Symposium is now sold out.\n\n\n\"What does “de-mate
rialization” really mean? To meet the increasingly pressing challeng
e of living within the planet’s ecological limits, we are forced to
seriously re-think and reduce the vast quantities of energy and materi
als circulating through the global economy. Experts say we need to red
uce overall throughput by a factor of 5 to 10! Easier said than done.
Come discuss how to translate this vision into action with de-material
ization thought leaders and practitioners. \"Bill Rees, founder of E
cological Footprint Analysis, will kick off the panel, explaining the
“why” behind a move toward de-materialization. Bill paints the mac
ro picture and presents the unprecedented challenge for planners and p
ractitioners, should they chose to accept it. We will then ground de-m
aterialization into an accessible narrative by watching a short animat
ed video narrated by Story of Stuff author Annie Leonard. The video ex
plains the “what” of de-materialization through an electronics cas
e study. Vanessa Timmer, from the One Earth Initiative, will then fram
e the “how” of de-materialization. She will discuss systems thinki
ng and opportunities to seize key levers of change aimed to achieve gl
obally coordinated transformation. Finally, Ross Moster, founder of Vi
llage Vancouver, brings this “how” into clear focus, describing wh
at some examples of de-materialization look like on-the-ground right h
ere in Vancouver. The panel will conclude with an open discussion wher
e symposium participants can join the dialogue about powering-down and
  energizing-up our economy through de-materialization.\"\n\nFor more i
